As We Come and Go, What Will Remain?
Nothing is permanent and nothing stays the same.
We move around and make a home in many places.
As we come and go what will be left of us in the places we leave behind?
As you leave you take with you the memories you have created in this town and leave nothing for this town to remember you by.
Leave your mark here and forever remain a memory.

My Final:
There are a million people who come in and out of New Paltz. While some of these people come here and make this there temporary home (or permanent home) they create memories here that they will remember for the rest of their lives. But the thing I keep questioning is that when people leave here what remains of us in New Paltz? We make this our home for however long and keep the memories of this place forever but what will New Paltz remember of us who leave? So I decided to construct a board or a kind of “memorial” to remember those who come and go. My idea is kind of like a large year book where the people of New Paltz could come and leave a piece of themselves here to always be remembered and for those who come to New Paltz to learn of the people who once called this place home.
For locations I thought that this would best work where New Paltz has a lot of people coming through and since it seemed to me that my project ended up more targeting the people who leave this town after some time like the students many of my places were on campus.
LOCATIONS:
-The Quad
-between or around the lecture center and humanities
-by the library
-Hasbrouck Park
-by the dining halls
-by the court house

The First Idea:

My first Idea was to go around New Paltz and take head shots of all different people in the New Paltz area and make a description card that went under the picture that had their first name, age, occupation, hometown, and nationality, on it. Then I was going to display these pictures and cards on a board or wall. With this I thought it would show all the people who make up this community or at least who make up this community while I live here. Then I decided that I wanted to do something where people could interact with the piece more…
So I threw out that idea and started to think more about this project and more about the people...
So I threw out that idea and started to think more about this project and more about the people...
The Start:
When we received this project I was really lost. I guess I just wasn't sure about the concept of the project. Then when I looked at the ways we could execute the project that completely sent me for a spin. I couldn’t get over the idea of a performance piece; that is possibly the scariest idea I could ever imagine. I thought to myself, I can hardly stand up in front of a class and give a presentation let alone stand in front of tons of people I don’t know and do a performance piece. Then I looked at the idea of community gatherings and installation and with that I started to get a few ideas.
I’ve always been interested in learning about people that I meet in life, like where they come from, what they have been through, and what they like and don’t like and why. So I took that and decided I wanted to do something dealing with people or more or less with community. Then I started thinking about who or what makes up a community? Specifically who makes up the community of New Paltz. I thought about this because New Paltz is a really small town compared to where I come from. Then I started thinking about how much the college makes up a big portion of this community and how students come and go all the time and how much the “people of New Paltz” change. I also thought about how we make this place our home while we are here and when we leave what will remain of us who have left? So with that this is how my project started…
